WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN? Simply stated, organic products grown or raised without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge or geneticall modified organisms. These products are strictly monitored by organic certification bodies that inspect production methods and audit the supply chain to ensure that products that claim to be organic genuinely are. These legal standards only apply to food and farming. For non-food products, suppliers may choose to opt in to organic certification but this is not a legal requirement. WHY USE ORGANIC BABY SKIN CARE PRODUCTS? Skin is the body's largest organ and absorbs everything that gets on it. Research has shown that skin absorbs 60% of what is applied on the skin may be absorbed into bloodstream. Hence, what goes on your body also goes into your body. For obvious reason, we will only prefer only safe ingredients are used on our skin care product. By using organic skin care products, we are reducing our exposures to toxins and minimizing their potentially harmful effects on people, animals, waterways and the environment. As organic ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers and in an environmentally sustainable way, organic products formulated with these ingredients are kinder to the environment too. |

HARMFUL INGREDIENTS IN COSMETICS Nearly 90% of ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products have not been safety tested for human health effects. Many syhthetic ingredients lurk in our daily care skin care products. Most of them are mouthful to say, and, as they turn out, that'e exactly where we put it. Below is a list of 'nasty' chemicals in cosmetics which we wish you to be aware off and we strongly encourage you to be a 'label decoder' ie know what's inside the ingredients before applying them unto our skin. |
DIETHANOLAMINE (DEA) & TRIETHANOLAMINE (TEA) sythentic compounds, often used as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They appear on labels as cocomide DEA. They are found in many skin lotions, moisturizing creams, shaving foams and shampoos. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritations and dryness of hair and skin.
FORMALDEHYDE a cheap preservative commonly found in deodorants and nail polish which can cause the skin to flare up. Look for ingredients such as formalin, formal and methyl aldehyde. It is suspected human carcinogen and can trigger asthma. Formaldehyde is an eye and respiratory tract irritant and can damage DNA. It is listed by the National Toxicology Program as ' reasonable anticipated' to be human carcinogens.
FRAGRANCE usually lised among ingredients as 'parfum' with a maltitude of synthetic chemicals that are the major cause of allergic responses. Many of the synthetic compounds in fragrance are toxic and can cause headaches, dizziness or nausea.
PARABEN a group of chemicals widely used as synthetic preservatives in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including underarm deodarants. Look for ingredient listed as Alkyl parahydroxy benzoates - Butyl/methyl/propyl/isobutyl paraben belong to paraben family. It is said to link to skin rashes and allergic reactions.
PETROCHEMICAL & PETROLATUM found in mineral oil and petroleum jelly products. May also contain in harmful impurities. It is prohibited for use in cosmetics in the European Union. Can be found in mascara, perfume, foundation, lipstick and lip balm. When it is applied unto skin, it prevents the skin from breathing, thus leading to skin dryness and chapping.
PHTHALATES found in everything from hair sprays and nail polish to perfume and moisturizers. Look for ingredients that end in 'phthalate'. They are used to 'soften' but have been linked to hormone disruption and asthma (phthalates chemically mimic hormones and are particularly hazardous to children). Phthalates have been banned in the US from children's toys because of fears about future futility. They have not, however, been banned yet from being used in cosmetics and skin care products.
PROPYLENE GLYCOL synthetic petrochemical used to attract moisture to the skin. It is derived from petroleum proplylene glycol and is also used in industry in antifreeze and hydraulic fluid. It can penetrate the outermost skin and carry other ingredients into the deeper layers of the epidermis. It may cause itching, burning, scaling and blistering of the skin and exacerbate eczema. Sensitive skin should avoid it. Also beware of PEG (polyethylene) and PPG (polypropylene glycol).
SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE (SLS/SLES) common cleansing ingredient in skin and hair care products that produces foamy lather that we associate with 'clean'. The drying property of SLS and SLES can cause skin dryness and irritation, not to mention strip hair of much-needed moisture. For those prone to rashes and dry skin and hair, it is advisable to look out for sulfate-free shampoos and cleansers. They might not suds up as much as conventional products but they'll leave you feeling just as clean.
TALC has been linked with ovarian cancer particularly when used in the genitalia and inhaled.
